'Walk the Ethical Talk' with Erica Gadsby from ReCreate Store

Discovering new initiatives and pathways to support ethical fashion is a pretty rewarding part of what I get to do at Modimade. ReCreate is my latest discovery. I absolutely love their new Kid's clothing range that we've just introduced to our store and am pretty sure you will too.

Welcome to our Kids Organic Clothing I've joined Erica Gadsby from ReCreate to take you a little deeper into what makes this range of children's clothing a MILLION times better than any other kid's boutique stores that you've listed in your favourite bookmarks. Here's what we chatted about......

Let's start with the question that's probably on every parents' mind when we look at a price tag......... value. As a parent myself, I know it's easy to resort to cheap fashion from large department stores or mass produced fads in clothing simply because of the cost. What makes the ReCreate range worth the extra dollar?

We truly believe that by choosing fair trade clothing such as ReCreate, you are helping other parents provide a strong future for their own children by ensuring that they are employed fairly, paid well, and have the time and energy to invest into their own family. This range is also made using 100% certified organic cotton, so you can be sure that no harsh chemicals have been used at any stage of the fabric production process… The best choice for your little ones skin!

Each of your designs are basic and have a classic look with a touch of funk. What made you select the graphics for this particular range? These graphics were designed to bring some fun into the mix! We knew that our sewing team in Cambodia would love creating these garments even more than our usual basics range. The style also gives a unique edge to what is being seen in children's fashion at the moment, giving kids stylish and age appropriate clothing to wear.

As a designer of children's fashion, what inspired you to look for a production house off shore, more specifically, why Cambodia? ReCreate started with the dream to help provide employment for women in Cambodia, and since garment production is a such a big industry there, the logical step was to design our own clothing range. Our team includes some amazing ladies who are fashion designers, so together we travelled to Cambodia set up a sewing centre and launch the ReCreate label. We knew that if we could train women as seamstresses they would have a bright future, whether or not they continued to sew for ReCreate.

The sewers at ReCreate

What benefits are the production of clothing at ReCreate having on a social and environmental level? Each year when we visit our sewing centre in Cambodia, we are seeing a very real change in the lives of our employees. They are growing not only in skill and financial security, but we also love seeing them increase in self-confidence and wellbeing. Their employment has a positive impact not only on their family, but also the extended family and community. We are also passionate about knowing that no damage has been caused to the environment through our clothes. And through your purchase, we hope that more and more people will choose clothing that has a positive effect in our world.

Recreate and Modimade have established a brand new trade partnership during 2016. How is this going to benefit the aims of ReCreate and what impact will the introduction of ReCreate clothing into Australia have in the longer term? Every ReCreate garment sold directly contributes to employment opportunity. So through our partnership with Modimade, we are able to better ensure sustainable long-term employment for our sewing team in Cambodia, as well as offer more positions for women to train. We are really excited to now be selling in Australia, and we hope that as more people recognise our brand, we can continue to grow and provide opportunity and hope for women in Cambodia.

Organic Clothing made with a smile

What's you're favourite piece from the kids collection?

From this collection we are in love with the Organic Denim Jean Dress. The simple cut means that it can easily be worn across seasons,  as well as styled for both summer and winter. The durable denim fabric is ideal for kids and is also certified organic, with a cute little recycled eco button to finish it off at the back. organic cotton hoody .......

This line of clothing is exactly what Modimade is about! The more wear we get out of our clothes, the more it's worth paying the extra price to buy ethical. My favourite is definitely the Organic Cotton Hoody. I love how it's perfect for the cooler evenings in summer or as a layered top for winter days. Simple and sweet. Plus I know I can pass it onto my #2 child as it's a great unisex piece and the fabric will last the distance. The denim shorts are great for that reason too.

Thanks heaps Erica for walk us through what makes the new kids clothes at little (well, a lot) more special than other kids boutique clothes.
